Florence is one the most beautiful cities in the world that has important architectural history. “When you walk in the streets of Florence its like you are walking into a painting”.

One of the most distinguished historical buildings in Florence is the “Duomo” (Florence Cathedral). This building can be seen from the highest area in Florence from Piazza del Michael Angelo.

The cathedral was first constructed in 1296, reflecting Gothic style. The world’s largest brick dome was designed and constructed by the famous architect and engineer Filippo Brunelleschi in 1436. It took them about 500 years to complete this astonishing building.

The exterior of the cathedral is fully covered with geometric green and beige marbles, reflecting Florentine colors and heritage. The exterior has many carved sculptures of religious bishops and saints alongside a very tall bell tower. The whole façade is dedicated to the Mother of Christ.

The Duomo

The Duomo’s interior is a completely different experience from the outside. The interior gives you a sense of the gothic interior which is vast and empty. The relative bareness of the church corresponds with the austerity of religious life, as preached by Girolamo Savonarola.

The interior is filled with famous paintings such as “Dante before the city of Florence” (Domenico di Machelino) and “The Funerary Monument to Sir John Hawkwood” (Paolo Uccello). There is also “The Equestrian Statue of Niccolo da Tolentino” by Andrea del Castagno. Natural light enters through the huge dome that is covered by mosaics.

The cathedral has 3 main gates. These huge bronze doors date back to the period of 1899 to 1903. These gates reflect scenery from the life of Madonna. The doors tell the story of ancient Florentine institutions along with Christ enthrones with Mary and John the Baptist.

Although its plan is distributed similarly to other cathedrals, the Duomo gives you a different sense. As you approach the Dome, you will find a spiral staircase.

When users go up there, they enjoy a 360 degrees view of the city center, This historical building is a must to see as it was and will still remain a distinguished building of Italian architecture.
