“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy”. Every space should be designed in a way to create visual harmony and comfort.
There are a set of rules that makes an interior space successful and they are mainly composed of 7 important layers and these layers must be treated according to a specific order.
Layer 1: (Walls and Ceilings)
The first layer is the “shell” of the room. Paint is the cheapest way to add warmth to your room. Find the most neutral shade that goes with your space and works well as a background to your other 6 layers. (Tip: Use a medium shade on paint strip for wall, paint ceiling 2 shades lighter if under than 9 feet high or 1 shade darker if over 9 feet high to make it seem cozier). Wallpaper can add an accent to a wall.
Layer 2: (Flooring)
This layer ranges from wall to wall carpet to pavestone. A floor connects and completes a room. (Tip: Keep the flooring as simple as possible).
Layer 3: (Upholstery)
Upholstery is considered an early stage in decorating. This layer is designed to assure this piece will stand the test of time. (Tip: Focus on simple classic lined furniture and fabrics of a neutral palette that won’t go out of time).
Layer 4: (Accent Fabrics)
This layer includes draperies, curtains and throw pillows. It adds personality to the room. This is where you can have fun with accent fabrics for pillows, curtains, draperies and runners. These pieces are the easiest to change from season to season when updating is required. Accent fabrics can come in different patterns with different shapes and sizes. (Tip: A room should have 3 different scales and shapes of patterns and must have a variety of geometric shapes, floral shapes, solid colors and organic shapes).
Layer 5: (Case Goods)

This layer is designed for functionality, Look for something fabulous and that serves a space effectively at the same time. (Tip: Keep focus on storage aspects and design at the same time, Select a coffee table with a drawer and a shelf accommodate storage).
Layer 6: (Wall Art and Accessories)
Accessories define your personal style, This layer is where you can have the most control when decorating, Proper arrangement can take ordinary clutter and turn it into wonderful spirit in a room. (Tip: Place objects at varying heights, group items by theme or by color and think about scale which helps prevent your accessories from being absorbed into the room).
Layer 7: (Plants and Lighting)
Plants and lighting work well together to create shadow and texture. Shadow is essential to create a mood and ambiance in a space and texture breathes life into a space. Group plants in threes all with different leaf sizes, colors, heights (Tip: Plants bring energy, color and fragrance to a space, make sure to place them in a terracotta or ceramic container. They are inexpensive decorative pieces).
